The mission of the Texas Board of Nursing is “… to protect and promote the welfare of the people of Texas by ensuring that each person holding a license as a nurse in the State of Texas is competent to practice safely. The Board fulfills its mission through the regulation of the practice of nursing and the approval of nursing education programs. This mission, derived from the Nursing Practice Act, supersedes the interest of any individual, the nursing profession, or any special interest group.” They are responsible for monitoring, regulating, and licensing roughly 26,000 licensed registered nurses and 98,000 licensed vocational nurses. The BON also approves 114 nursing education programs for registered nurses and roughly 98 programs for licensed vocational nurses. Their services include:

  • Licensing: licensing nurses as new graduates through examination and endorsement from other states; approves qualified registered nurses to enter practice as advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs); renewal of a nursing license, and more…
  • Nursing Program Approval: Approves schools of nursing which prepare nurses for initial entry into nursing practice; performs annual review of approval status of all nursing education programs; performs survey visits to non-nationally accredited programs at least once every 6 years, and more…
  • Enforcement: enforces the Nursing Practice Act and BON Rules and Regulations by setting minimum standards for nursing practice and nursing education, conducting investigations of complaints against nurses, and examining and adjudicating complaints. More…
  • Information: the BON provides a variety of information to customers that includes verbal, written, and electronic, both through their website and in person.
