ECI’s mission is to “[assure] that families with young children with developmental delays have the resources and support they need to reach their goals.” It is a statewide program that serves families with children aged 0-3 with developmental delays and disabilities. Their services are provided through a range of local agencies and organizations across Texas, and include:
- Individualized Planning Process:
ECI determines a child’s eligibility for the program, and then works with the family to develop a plan that will be the best fit.
- Family-Centered Services
ECI professionals and family members determine the best activities to incorporate in the family’s daily life to promote the child’s development.
- Case Management
Service coordinators help families access and receive the services, resources, and supports they need to support their childs development. These can include transitioning to special education programs. ECI programs support not just the children, but the family, given that their needs are directly related to the child’s development.
- Familiar Settings
Most ECI services are provided at home, but can also be provided in other locations the child frequents, such as a park, library, or other community setting.
- Professional Providers
The team evaluating the child and determining their plan includes licensed or credentialed early intervention specialists, speech and language pathologists, physical and occupational therapists, psychologists, registered nurses, dietitians, social workers, and counselors.
- Plans for Continuing Services
While ECI services end when the child turns three, the ECI team collaborates with the family to determine next steps. Whether the child begins to attend public school, preschool, transitions to a childcare center, etc. the goal is to ensure that if the child needs further intervention services, they are able to make a smooth transition with no services gaps.
